A few things about myself that you might not know...

I decided that I will tell you all a little bit about myself - nothing intimate of the sorts (which is quite the norm here) but just a few quirky, weird or different things about myself that you might not know. Most of you who read my blog know me personally, or at least we have met some time or another in the past - but I am sure there are readers who have never even seen my face or even heard my voice and might be a bit more interested in what they'll read below. Yet I am sure that even those that I have met before, or even people that I have regular contact with and see on a daily basis, might not have a clue about all my idiosyncrasies - and honestly, I don't blame you for that! heh... but anyways, here I go!

1. At home I ALWAYS walk barefoot. This is a constant reason for petty little arguments with my father as he claims that whenever I walk barefoot in the kitchen I dirty his recently mopped white tile floor. Tadinho... before when I was around 13 or so I was only able to dance if I was barefoot. As the only parties I'd go to were at friends' house that wasn't a big problem, but as I started to go clubbing I had to get used to shaking around wearing high heels and resisting the urge to rip them off - and just taking one look at the filthy floor would usually do the trick.

2. One thing that absolutely drives me crazy is not having a pen and paper with me at ALL times! And at all times I literally mean ALL times!!! Once I was walking to a class when I felt like I wanted to jot something down so I stopped in the middle of the sidewalk and opened my bag to grab my pen and notepad. But much to my total horror, I remembered I had just changed bags when I was walking out the door and had left my pens (my bag always has at least three pens) inside my other bag. Arrggg!!! So I walked to a little store and asked the lady for a pen. A man appeared right behind me and made the same request. As I searched for the money I noticed that I left not only my pens in my other bag but my money as well. I felt my heart sink and told the lady how I had forgotten my cash at home when the man behind me placed a pen in my hand and told me: "There you go!" and handed the lady an extra bill. That man could have given me aR$100.00 bill and the feeling of gratitude wouldn't have beat what I felt at that moment.

3. Books. I call myself a complete nerd and all my close friends and students bluntly agree with this statement. Why? I just LOVE reading!!! And not only do I love reading, I also read like a mad woman. I read about two books a week (sometimes even more!) - and these are books ranging from 350 - 600 pages. The crazy thing is that I don't ever read when I am home as I have so much to do that it's not even an option. Where do I read? bus stops, bus terminal, bus rides, bank lines, long shopping lines, waiting for my food to arrive when at a restaurant or snack bar, waiting for a student to arrive, when I am in my Dad's car; are just a few examples. All my students lend me books continuously - many times it’s a book they just bought and didn't even have the time (or desire) to crack it open yet. I devour it as soon as it's in my hands and in a few days it's back in their hands.

4. Okay, this one is really weird and has to do with my sleeping habits. Almost every night I go to my bed, lie down and toss back and forth in bed without a drop of sleep but crazy to konk out as its past midnight and the next day I need to be up at 5:30 am. No relent. After trying all I can to catch some sleep I grab a book (I have a book just for this special purpose - it's a slow and somewhat boring book - one that you don't want stay up all night to finish it because it's so repetitive and slow!) and then I go straight to my favorite couch. My pillow and sheet tag along. I turn on the living room lights, make myself comfortable, open my book and before I have even finished reading the first page I am soundly sleeping. In the middle of the night I will get up and sleep walk till my bed where I wake up every morning at. I am sure it's psychological or something of the sorts as it works like magic always! And it's not like I haven't tried to do the exact same thing in my own bed - but it just proves to be a total fail! Nowadays I don't even wait to toss and turn; I just grab my book, pillow and sheet, walk to the sofa and am asleep in a matter of seconds. My parents have now nicknamed the living room as "Christy's room" and my sofa as "Christy's bed", hah! Well, at least I've found out what works for me and I get to get a good night's sleep!

5. India. I've always had a fascination and huge curiosity to meet India. Whenever I ask my students or friends: "If you could go visit any country in the world, where would you go?" the answers I frequently get are: USA, Europe, Canada, Australia... and that's about it. Every once in a while I get  Chile, Argentina or Uruguay for an answer; and even that's rare. So whenever I answer: "Definitely India!" I get all kinds of shocked expressions and surprised answers. -" Why do you want to visit a filthy, overpopulated, crowded, creepy, poor and God-forbidden place as India???" My answer: "I don't know exactly. It's so mysterious, exotic, strange and different. Since I was only 8 years old I've wanted to go there and through the years that desire has never left me." Well, I believe in dreams, and who knows that dream might just come true next year, eh? :D
